SAHARSA: A six-year-old student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Saharsa, has challenged the school principal’s decision to deny him promotion to the next class on the ground of shortage in class attendance and has moved Patna High Court for remedial measures on the basis of his good performance in the annual school examination. The tug-of-war between Debansh Priya and the administration of Kendriya Vidyalaya had been continuing for the last two months and took an interesting turn when the boy’s writ petition was admitted in the HC on April 19 for hearing.
Due to some problems in spinal cord, doctors had advised Debansh complete bed rest and he had remained absent from his class for five months — from July 14 to December 15, 2006. Meanwhile, his name was struck off from the class attendance register, but as he was granted leave on special medical ground, he was re-admitted in the school. The boy was also permitted to appear for the annual examination and was awarded grade A in his report card.
However, the school management decided to detain Debansh in the same class on the ground of shortage in attendance. Debansh’s father B N Singh had approached the school principal several times as the boy was upset and refused to join the old class. But the authorities remained rigid on detaining him in class I. According to the writ petition filed in the HC, the boy should not have been allowed to appear for the examination on the ground of low attendance, and, once he had appeared for the examination and come out with good result, he should not have been denied promotion to the next class as it would spoil a bright student’s future.
